VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

IMPORTANT: The Shelter will be closed until October 15th. Current volunteer opportunities are to renovate and get the building up to code and/or fundraising. After October 15th, all other volunteer opportunities will be available.

 

Volunteers - To get the new facility up to code!
Your expertise in building, plumbing, electrical engineering, etc. are needed as we move toward getting the building ready for next season!

NOTE: The hours shown below should be used as a guideline. The schedule may be altered significantly after we open.

Volunteer Blanket Washers
• Residents blankets and pillow cases get washed every 7 days they are used
• Pick up 2 loads (4 blankets and 2 pillow cases) at the shelter between the hours of 6 pm and 10 pm
• Return the blankets within 3 days during the same time frame

Volunteer Evening Meal Providers
• Prepare a meal at a place of your choice for about 35 people
• Bring meal and drinks to shelter and serve it (we provide plates, bowls, napkins and eating utensils); visit with residents if possible
• Because we have very limited space for food, please take all perishable leftovers home with you.

Volunteer Evening Staff
• Arrive at the shelter at 5:45 and help set up for dinner (put up tables and chairs, get out plates, napkins, utensils and condiments to be served with meal)
• Assist dinner volunteers when they arrive
• Open shelter at 6 pm, sign in guests, and help serve dinner if needed.
• Assist guest with their needs: give out bins with belongings, hygiene items, snacks etc., take residents on smoke breaks, ensure each resident has only one mat and adequate sleeping space
• There must always be two volunteers at the shelter. Stay until overnight person arrives

Volunteer Night Staff
• Arrive at the shelter at 9 pm if possible
• Get briefing from evening volunteer, greet guests, let them know you are there
• Make sure each resident has one mat and adequate sleeping space, take residents on smoke breaks, lights out by 10pm including all electronic devices, do not allow residents to come in and out between the hours of 10 pm and 6 am
• Wake-up at 5:30, set up continental style breakfast, turn lights on at 6 am, make sure all residents are up and out the door by 7 am, clean up after they leave, lock shelter for the day on departure.

Volunteer Calendar

Below is the volunteer calendar for Bigger Vision of Athens. Our shelter is staffed completely by volunteers. The hours of operation are from 6 PM to 7 AM. This allows the volunteers to get to their regular jobs. Two staff persons are always on duty while the shelter is open.
